Further to my previous post I've had the chance to test a Hegner and whilst clearly a more refined and versatile machine I've decided to stick with my old Cowell - principally, as being a jigsaw, it far quicker to use for a lot or pierced work.

I've been making up some new galley fretwork to repair a 18th century mahogany silver table. Similar, but not identical, to this one.

Here's what I've achieved so far - after the best part of a day's eyeball straining work.

Too much concentration I think I'll give it a rest for a day or two before I do the other three :)

Wow !! that looks class work to me . Idont wonder at you being drained after that . Up to now it would never have occurred to me how these pieces were made or the degree of difficulty attached.
I envy you your skill . Thanks for the insight .

Not being used to scroll/fret work I didn't realise how long it would take! I've learnt quite a bit as I've gone along, such as where best to drill the start holes and which way round it's best to tackle the shapes. I cheated by drilling the quatrefoils with a forstner bit. :)

Very nice work Roger

I have just bought a second hand Delta but not used it yet, it will be a long time before I can cut something like this.

I don't think you cheated by using a forstner bit, it has achieved the desired result, no one would say using a mortising machine instead of a firmer chisel is cheating!
