hello everyone i'm hoping someone can help i cant decide between a supernova 2 or parrot chuck! is one better than the other? turners toolbox have an offer on at the moment for supernova 2 at £99, this will be my first chuck any advice would be helpful many thanks matt.

First question mathew is, does your lathe have a ¾” x 16tpi nose thread or match the adaptor range that the special offer chuck comes with?

Welcome to the forum by the way.

Evenin' Matt. I use 2 Supernova chucks in my work and am more than happy with their performance.

There are more expensive chucks around, as there is also a few cheaper models. The Nova is pretty much middle of the road as far as price goes.

When looking for a chuck I always say that, you should be able to move the chuck to another lathe if you ever upgrade. Just need to change the Nova insert. It should be a reasonably popular chuck so will be around for a few years, and that there is a fair selection of different jaw sets for it. The Nova has met all that criteria for me.

PS - Welcome to the forum.

Hi again. Just had a look at the offer, that is a good price considering it fits your lathe. A new insert would have cost you about £20 if your shaft nose was different.

If I was in the market I would go for it, IMO.

Hello, and welcome to the forum :D

Never yet seen a bad write-up on the Supernova chuck,so if you've got the cash, then go for it!

Andrew

Assuming you mean Patriot chuck, they are both identical and interchangeable so I guess the Supa nova wins on cost

sorry i did mean patriot chuck! so could the patriot jaws fit the supernova because i think they are a little cheaper?

Acccording to the Sorby reps yess. Sorby used to market the Supanova until it went Chinese and then designed and produced the Patrioyt in this country. It is apparently identical in all dimensions. Double check to make sure tho'.

thankyou everyone for your help i think ill go for the supernova 2 for £99 its hard to ignore. also thankyou for your welcomes

Having bought a new lathe two weeks ago I bought at the same time a super nova chuck, and I paid £129.00 (for the chuck). I am more than happy with the chuck and what has been said on the forum, you have a wide range of different jaws that you can buy and are not that expensive. Always buy the best that yo can afford.

Welcome Mattew, You picked the right chuck I hope you have the same inspiration in all your turning decisions. Axminster have all the jaw sets for the supernova and seem to be reasonable priced, and you wont get quicker delivery anywhere IMO. Regards Boysie

Iv ordered the supernova 2 chuck today so it should be with me ready for the weekend so i might get a chance to give it a go inbetween sorting the garden and shopping with the mrs! thanks for everyones help again matt.
