Wooden marking gauge very stiff....

Hi all, I have a Draper No. 44 wooden marking gauge (https://www.drapertools.com/product/64440/carpenters-marking-gauge/ )

It's been in my (dry) shed for a while and now it's seen the light of day, it's very difficult to move the "square" piece up and down the shaft.

The whole thing is made of wood, of course.

Any reccomendations as to how I can get things working smoothly?
