I don't recall what was said about weight but one of the reasons for the holes in the wheels was to ease clamping - of the bearing mount blocks IIRC. Another thing was balancing in that you're going to have to make a hole or two in the wheel anyway.
And with large momentum comes large inertia, and (again IIRC) you will probably have gone for an induction motor and you pay for quietness and long life with poor starting torque.
