Hi All,

At moment I am freehand sharpening, on a B&Q grinder and am getting okish results, not to bad to effect my begiiner level turning - so far.

However I would rather spend less time, being very very careful not to messup my tool angles at the grinder, and more time turning ! - Its takes me several minutes per tool to sharpen.

So - looking to get a rig,

Have found this - http://www.philironswoodturning.co.uk/woodcutsharpening.htm

Anyone used one of these ? any experience ? - or suggest better for a beginner ? ( dont have lots of cash for this though )

Thanks

Loz

Hi Loz.

Know nothing about the Truegrind other than a friend of mine had one. He then bought a Oneway Wolverine. Why he didn't stay with the Truegrind I don't know, but he seems to have a few bob  so may think another rig may make life easier for him.

Personally my choice would be to construct one yourself, they are not difficult and there are many designs/models to copy around this site, and the web.

Have a look at some of Chas's posts, he has already made a few. Or have a look at a post I did a day or so ago, it may give you some food for thought. My post IMO I don't think anyone needs a jig to sharpen other than for the spindle and bowl gouges with the long grind wings, all other chisels/scrapers and what have you can be sharpened freehand on a flat tilting table.

Yes! ...and to make life easier:

set your table platform to the desired angle, use a scrap piece of ply, place it on the table and pencil in the curve of the grindstone, cut or file to shape and LABEL it
Do one for each of your grinds (spindle, bowl, skew etc.)

So easy to set the table platform and touch up the tool edge in seconds 8)

I use the Trugrind that I bought from Axminster. I've never used any other jib so I can't compare it to anything else. It does the job. Not much else to say about it. One thing which I like is the ability to true up the wheel.

If I was starting from scratch now I'd probably make my own.

Hi Graham
Not sure what you are describing?? Why pencil in the curve of the grindstone for each gouge?
Cheers

I use these simple setup pieces to approximate the angle produced by the curved wheel when grinding freehand.

Take a look at Chas' last pic... move the wood to the left side which allows you to trace the curve... (cheers, Chas)

If you grind all of your gouges to one angle then you won't need the templates but I have different angles on mine...several for bowl gouges etc.

Hope this helps Steve, if not get back to me...
