You might want to take a look at the Zyliss Vice.
Still see them fairly often second hand on E-bay

Thanks.

It doesn't look anywhere near as sturdy as the Record vices, though!

My father used one for years and it is surprisingly strong and capable.
I rarely use it myself so won't comment, but it may be worth doing some research on it and asking other people's opinions.
Some swear by it while others dislike it.

Kevin

Is this the kind of vice you are after?

I picked this one up for a couple of pounds at a boot fair. It is handy but would struggle with a 6" wide piece of stock although 5" is ok.

Not seen a Zyliss before, worth knowing about. Had forgotten about Andy's Parrot vice also. Spoiled for choice, and way under max budget :)

Two points about the Zyliss - the orginal ones were made in Switzerland and are good. Since the design protection ran out, cheaper copies have appeared, which are said to be inferior.
Although it clamps to the edge of the bench, the max thickness is not great - about 50mm I think. Ok if your bench is a kitchen worktop or fire door blank, but frustrating if you have upgraded your bench top to something chunky. I was given a Zyliss about the same time as I changed my benchtop...

The Zyliss is really versatile - it can do almost anything other than cabinetwork!

It's not a moxton vice you are after is it?
Search the forum for examples

Forgive me but 'Moxon', after Joseph Moxon to whom it was wrongly attributed by Chris Schwarz years ago in Pop Wood...;)
