Well let me say right at beginning I am not a wood tuner, no sir not me.

I was the only one to arrive at Allen's on Saturday afternoon, so the bash turned in to a one to one :D , let me say he is a very competent turner and was very patient with this complete novice in the world of spinney things. 8)

Allen has a shed set up just for turning, very large lathe (er can't remember the make  ) cast iron bed 3 phase 2HP motor on a variable speed inverter, very smooth. 8)
So here is me armed with a roughing gouge

I now understand the comment you all make about bevel contact and can even do it most of the time. Look I am making shavings :D

Having made a cylinder from a rectangular blank I was introduced to the skew

which was harder to control but gave a much better finish.
Allen then marked out some rings and I had a go at cutting coves and beads.

Well coves are easier than beads. Sorry we forgot take any pictures of the odd shapes I made.
Then I had a lesson in bowl turning, the thing that was very noticeable, the constant changing from long grain to end grain, something that has never happened to me on flat board work. The sharpness of the tools becomes even more important.

The Tormek produced sharp repeatable edges.
Truing the blank

Sorry again big gap, here I am working on the inside.

Allen did take this one of the outside.

And here is the finished bowl.

I must confess to pulling it off the dovetail jaws when I started truing the top.
I had a great time due to the skill of this chap
2837999850_be868ea158.jpg

who has shown me another Slope TM
And the best bit was having a very nice oak bowl that the LOML thought was very nice and was quite surprised when I said I had done 90% of the work on it.
All of the pictures we took and a few from Yandle's can be seen here.

Allen you were a star. Thanks very much for a great afternoon of tuition.

Looks like a missed a great day! It must be a funny time of year for bashes, maybe we should look at the start of summer or spring next year? I seem to have weekend family commitments now until xmas!

I'd deffo like to come to Blister's next bash! Turning interests me greatly.

I am not JOKING when I say I have another 100 turning tools not in the rack

If you are long term members of the forum you will recall the workshop buy outs I have been involved in over the past 2 years

See a add for a item I need , go and view the item then get told there is a complete workshop that needs clearing , and yes I fall for it  , now just completed the 4th buy out and have 3 big lathes 2 small lathes , tons of tools , 3 tormek grinders , 2 extractors , must be a ton of wood turning stock .

This is the one I just purchased , https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/view ... highlight=

Must stop looking on here and ebay
Is there sutch a thing as an addiction to LATHES and TOOLS :p

If there is I need REHAB

I would like to say , Dave was a great student and picked things up quickly , I was impressed with how he coped on his fist time turning , he even managed to " tame the skew "

Tools used , Roughing gouge , Skew , Spindle gouges , Bowl gouges .

If Dave does decide to start turning he is well on his way already , The design and shape are to the plan that was drawn up by Dave before turning started

Happy that Dave had a good day and that the LOHL like the finished item

Turned to the best tool finish , sanded through the grits to 1500 , sanding sealer 2 coats de nibbed between coats , then 2 coats of polish , excellent finish " If you like shiny "

Well do Dave =D> =D> \:D/

either of them 3 Tormeks going cheap with jigs included ?

What's this??? Tormeks for sale?? Would you swap a lovely 10month old child?? :D
