I am an avid recycler and most of the things(if not all) I have made have been made from odds and ends of wood that have come into my possession (floorboards ends of 2x4's etc), but all of the wood has been softwood. I would love to try using hardwoods, but wouldn't have the faintest idea of how to identify them. Can anyone recommend a good book on the subject of wood identification. I would be most grateful !!

Iuse a book by Aidan Walker called "Identifyimg Wood" ISBN 1-85076-755-6, comes in at approx £6.00 although may have gone up since i bought mone.

I'm sure there are other books out there, but I do find this one useful.

I've got a copy of The Wood Handbook by Nick Gibbs ISBN 1-84543-001-8 and would recommend it. Mine was a present but the price on the cover says £12.99. The colour plates are pretty accurate and cover most of the usual timbers, both hard and soft woods. Lots of technical info, too.

Regards.

Bulrush,

I have a copy of Wood - Identification and use by Terry Porter. I got it free for some reason, and recall that if I'd had to pay for it then I wouldn't have got it. That said, I've pondered its pages on many an occasion and suspect that its probably worth whatever the asking price is.

Cheers,

Dod

It might be worth noting that there's now an updated/revised edition of Wood Identificaton and Use.

I also have the original book and find it to be a great aid at times with the superb photographs.
