Wood Identification

I have a quantity of solid hardwood engineered blocks that I lifted from underneath a carpet during some renovations and wonder if anyone can recognise the wood type?
This is a block as lifted - they have an extremely thin layer of what I assume is varnish and is laid on top of some recently refinished pitch-pine blocks for colour comparison -

This is what the end-grain looks like -

..and finally this is a block after a light sand and partially coated with a film of thinned Tung oil -

I don't know what species your flooring is (I would only be guessing), however, they do look pretty when finished.

Though wood block flooring is traditionally high quality timber in old buildings, much of the newer stuff is made from saw mill odds and ends. The piece you have looks like oak sawn at an angle to the grain possibly a European or Asian Oak.
