Got given the following by Jim but forgot what he said it was. Can't get hold of of him at the moment. Can someone please help me with identification?

First thought is Holly. Tight grained heavy wood if it is. If you can dry it reasonably quickly has a lovely creamy white colour but goes a bit green if dried slowly.

Hi richard,

Been away for a few days
Can't remember what it was but beaus guess of holy sounds about right, it will be as hard as iron if it is!

It looks very like hollly - if you peel off the bark it has a very distinctive "salad" kind of smell (I always think it smells like something good enough to eat - the leaves were used as animal fodder in the good ol' days). Cheers, W2S

Apparently only the leaves that can be reached by animals are prickly, the rest aren't.

Yes indeedy, that said, I think that your average hungry cow would probably even eat the prickly ones!
