Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me identify the following two types of wood. I bought them both from a local car boot sale and paid £10 for the pair. Not sure whether it's a good price or not but I'm sure I'll be able to put them to use somehow and if anything else it gives me some material to practice on and gain some woodworking experience. The person I bought them from didn't know what type of wood it was but said they might have originally come from a boat, not sure how accurate that info was though. They were about 1.6 meters long and the first was about 1/2 meter wide, the second was approximately 1 meter wide.
I've tried to include as much info as possible in the photos.

The first bit of wood was completely covered on one side with some type of hard resin-like substance (adhesive I presume), as seen in the following photo.

A few strokes with a plane revealed a glimpse of the wood beneath the 'resin'.

I returned to the board some weeks later and planed all the resin off and the following two shots show some quite nice 'figure' (or so I thought). I'm not sure how accurate the colour is. I tried to take an accurate white balance reading but I'm not sure how true to life the colour is as I'm sure I remember it being a little more red, as in the above photos.

And finally a few shavings from the side and end end of the board.

Thanks very much guys and thanks also for the useful links :)

Any ideas on the species for the second piece of wood? I've looked through the wood species in the links given but there are so many to choose from and a lot look quite similar.

Cracking photos JJ1, much better than the usual phone camera shots.

Thanks Rob. That's a nice surprise and seems like I got a very good deal for a tenner.

Thanks Pete. My main hobby other than woodworking has been wildlife photography for the last 15 or so years so it was a nice change to photograph something that doesn't want to flee at the first sight of a camera. :)

So you used a 300mm f2.8 with a x2 converter for the close ups?
