Is anyone able to identify this wood?
It's a piece from a batch I inherited from a relative, and has a bit of history.
He cleared it out from Hattersley's mill in Keighley in the 70s, then stored it in his loft for the last 50 years. It had possibly been sitting the mill for 50 years or more before that. He believed it was to be used to make shuttles for the looms, and thought it might be box wood. I'm fairly clueless, and have no idea from looking at it if this is likely.
I've turned a little of it (assuming everything in the batch is the same). It worked nicely, but it wasn't very forgiving when it came to putting a finish on it. I ended up with torn grain. This is largely due to lack of skill on my part, but I usually get better results with when working with other bits of random wood.
Can post more picture if that helps.
