Was fascia on an old building
 
Western red cedar is my pick. If its quite light in weight and you can mark it with your thumb nail its good indicators. Got used a lot for cladding.

Parana pine but surprised it was used externally as it's classed as not durable.

Can't comment on why it would have been used as fascia, much of it had to be binned due to rot. Apparently it was put up there at least 100 years ago
