As part of my workshop clearout I have started pulling stuff from my timber store.
I've 2 planks of this which looks to me likely oak judging by the colour and the staining, however the planed bit whilst also looking like oak has no characteristic smell - and I've processed a lot of oak in my time!!
Any ideas if it's something else?
Ed

I suspect it is oak. It will be easier to identify with with hand planed surfaces, end grain and on the side surface.

Looks like white American oak (the green end sealer makes me think it's American). Some guitar maker might bite your arm off for that mahogany if it's Brazilian.
Cheers

Oak will show medullary rays on quarter sawn planks whereas chestnut will not. I would still think it's American White Oak.

I'll go with oak as being most likely - the staining made me think it oak too.
It along with a lot of what was sold as Sapele will go on the for sale forum when I've worked out how to price it..
Many thanks to all
