Can anyone help me ID this timber that came off an old bench?

I would guess this is timber from a garden bench/table from the Far East. I had one and when the feet etc. rotted, I took that apart and I would say that is the same type. I would say Rubberwood/gum tree is most likely, not a "decent" hardwood like hickory or ash! I too have seen similar wood used in pallets/crates.

I agree with XTiffy. I salvaged some from my neighbour's garden table a while back. If it's the same, it's quite light in weight, it absorbs preserver readily and in my case also takes alcohol dye. It is suitable for outdoor use but not great unless you treat it each year and put a barrier between the legs and the ground (plastic cutting board in my case).

Edit. I only found out what it was called from a previous post here on UKW
