Was having a bit of a tidy up and thought I'd take some pics. I haven't done a proper workshop tour since I moved here in October.

It's a garage attatched to the house, entered via the kitchen. The house is on a corner so I've ended up with some funny angles.

The whole thing is a work in progress. The best bit being the workbench I built with MarkW early this year. I really enjoy standing here 'fiddling'. I find I can stand for much longer before my back starts piping up.

I have the compressor stored under the vice. Tho I'm thinking of getting rid of it as I've literally used it twice.

I have my machinery lined up against the walls. The drill press and bandsaw are on wheels and are pulled out when needed, it works well for me. My intention was to line this wall with ply but only got as far as putting up the studs. The shelving is very useful in getting all the clutter up off the floor.

On the other wall I have my Jet P/T and some more storage. This side of the 'shop needs some sorting out. I have some long sheet stock leaning against the wall but it's a massive space waster. I'm tempted to just skip it. At the far end I have a large metal filing cabinet where power tools and finishes are stored. It's really handy, with tough full extending drawers. I also keep my sharpening stuff in the top compartment. My clamps are rather precariously hung next to it.

This is a bit of a lash up that hasn't really worked out for me. The idea was to get the Triton off it's legs and onto a trolley in order to make use of the area underneath it and incorporate the router table.

Nice idea in principle but needs a bit of tweaking to get it all running right. TBH I have lost interest in the idea and set my sights on a new TS.

I tend to store timber anywhere it will fit. It's everywhere at the moment.

That's about it. I would love to have one of those clinically clean workshops with no clutter. I seriously doubt I'll ever get there tho, no in this shop anyway. ;)

Love looking round others workplaces. It doesn't look that untidy to me.I wonder how long it will be before my new workshop looks like my last one?

Thanks for sharing WiZeR. Not sure what to suggest with regards to your timber storage situation, but it looks like you've got all your machinery pretty well laid out. :)

Tiz tidier than mine !

the wood storage thing is a tough one , thats why I started the thread .

I guess all those off cuts 'that might come in handy' all add up too quickly

I am just making up things to use the offcuts. Even small bird boxes for those tiny bits of 6mm ply !

I replanned some pigeon hole storage I am making so I could use up a load of 8' x 10" ply I had left over from my boat. had about 20 peices !

I just dont know how people work in these shops, I cant stand clutter, I have a bit of it but its going as soon as I finish this current project the next one is a garage conversion!

Still Wizer, Ive seen your work and its fantastic it just goes to show you dont need all the space in the world.

WiZeR, I've been thinking about this and I reckon that a good place to store sheet materials (horizontally) may be behind your mitre saw, where you could "make use of" all that wasted space behind the saw because of the long rails.

PM'd WiZer the other day and asked if he wouldn't mind some shots of my 'shop, it's a about the same size but arranged differently:

These were taken last year, there's a few more planes stored now:

  ...no SCMS (site tool, others disagree) and I haveln't got a pic of the lathe or routher table - Rob

What I wouldnt give to have a nicely laid out and tidy shop like that. Soon soon.....

Whats the big thing that looks like a white board? And wheres your Planer and Thicknesses? I want more pictures!

Kity p/t is in the first pic, the only thing on thats movable is the big board in front of the wood rack which is the bag for the AirPress...I just drop the whole thing on the floor to do a bit of veneering - Rob

very neat ! what size your shop ?

oh - and dont worry .... I'm sure you'll have enough stuff to fill it up one day  :p

'Shop is 20'x12' so approx the same size as WiZer's - Rob

I have had a good look at your pictures Rob. You're right it certainly feels bigger. The big advantage you have it almost 4 walls, where I have the roller door to contend with. I do agree that the SCMS is a massive space waster. Tho, i'm not sure I could get rid of it now I have it. For rough work and construction, it's a godsend. Organising my 'shop is an ongoing project. If I try and do it all at once I'll be at it for months. At the end of the year I am going to invest in a new table saw and change the layout to accommodate it. One thing I have found is I need an assemble place. The TS+Outfeed will double up for this purpose and probably incorporate the RT too. The SCMS will probably endup on wheels so it can be pushed out of the way when not used.

I'm seriously thinking about building an additional shed in the garden for either timber stock or just to tack up the slack of junk which I seem to have accumulated but can't bare to bin.

Olly: Good idea about that wall. Probably the best place for boards. With the board out of the way it will give me space for the drill press.

after seeing woodbloke's shop I am making changes to mine. already it is looking a lot better as I get rid of my clutter.

I will post more pics in 'oi nosey' thread :)

I think that is the a good first step for most people. It allows you to see and feel much more.

It made me realise how few machines I really did have.

Need to fix that soon :D
