Well its a year I've been playing at this now and I love doing it now as much as I did when starting, best damn hobby/sideline going IMO
So to celebrate  I've had a morning in the shed with my camera.
First I took a lump of an old cracked Oak gate post and turned it to round, leaving a dovetail either end.(click little piccies for bigger ones)
Then I roughed out the shape of a vase...
Then sawed the top off and taped the lower part for hollowing(there are very deep cracks and the tape will hopefully stop it exploding)
Hollowed to a very thick 12mm as the cracks are so bad, I just think I'll loose it if I go thinner!
Once hollowed the base is cut to the final diameter...
That done its on to the top part,it's mounted with the dovetail that was made when it was roughed into a cylinder. A socket is formed in the inside of the neck to reverse it.
The top of the neck can now be hollowed.
The two pieces are now glued up and burn lines used to cunningly disguise the join. Then the whole thing was wire brushed(by hand) with the grain to texture it.
Then it was parted off and the bottom finished with a sanding arbor in the Jacobs chuck. Now it just needs a finish.
Finished with oil, a fun mornings turning 8)
Close up of textured finish.
The piece is 6" wide and 8 1/2" in height. Any comments/critiques are very welcome.
