I'm making a jewelry box from walnut and maple. Missed some pictures as i have just had to buy a new camera.

Went to fitchetts in Nottingham to get some walnut and was a little disappointed to get 3' of sap in an 8' board :(

So here are the bit dimensioned joints cut  or drilled i should say  ready for glue up.

Dowels were drilled with this jig.

Got 7 days to finish this one.

I like the look of the design so far and it's nice to see you putting that 'bench to good use, Sean. :)

Is that a lathe I spy in the background of photo six???

I think you may need some more electrical outlets in your workshop as well...! :D

Thanks Olly

It is a lathe and i have turned several hundred items on it. However i would describe it as a pile of shitee to hold two large bits of beech a got given to stop it wandering out the garage (i mean workshop). The best bit about it is the bristol levers that mr 9fingers (thankyou) got me! I got it second hand (Clarke CWL20RV) and the best bit was getting a Oneway chuck thrown in.

I have about 20 items pluged into 1 socket!  I really ought to post a thread about my workshop?

I can also show you the same P/T you have but mine is Fox, but has the same alu. fence. It's rubbish, can't get it to stay square.

Nice design, I made a similar one for my Mum. Are you going for a lift off lid or hinged one? I decided hinged was just not going to work so kept it simple.

Looks good so far, really must get my compo design fleshed out

I actually get on alright with the fence on my machine, although I do find it needs checking each time I remove and replace it. Also, if I slide it across the width of the bed. I don't find that it flexes or anything like that. Using the bolt for fine adjustment seems to help, before locking the Bristol levers.

If the worst comes to it and you have £70 to spare... You could always buy the cast iron upgrade from Axminster....

Sounds like your workshop's coming along nicely then... Can't wait to see some photos!! :)

I was going to get the cast iron fence Olly a few weeks ago, then found it was £90  pipper!

A jig to route the quadrant hinges, not Brusso  one day i will take out a loan and get some

First bit routed

Change the block and do the rest.
dscf2356-2.jpg

Several holes drilled on drill press and then joined together with drill by hand.

Template for veneer for top.
dscf2356-4.jpg

Veneering top and cutting the mitres, middle is birds eye maple, then macassar ebony crossbanded, a 2mm string of maple and walnut around the edge. The ebony was a pipper to cut and kept breaking up so i had to use a bit of 7mm tape on all of it.
dscf2356-5.jpg

My very sophisticated heated platen press, 30mm MDF, 2 bits of polythene, some beech very slightly curved and a central heating system.
dscf2356-6.jpg

All cramped up, i used cascamite, quite thick as to not seep through the veneer to much. As i was gluing the 2mm maple would not want to stay flat because of expansion with the water in the glue, so had to roller it a bit. I just hope it all comes out ok tomorrow.

I like your veneer press. With all that blue tape, you must be a fan of
...???

Sorry, Sean, I didn't realise the fence had rocketed up in price so much!! While this may not help to keep it square, attaching a false face with a formica/laminate finish using double-sided tape could also help... I find the fence to be a bit dry at times. Lubrication doesn't always help. I also think mine is very slightly twisted along it's length but, it is aluminium after all and it doesn't seem to affect my work.

My P/T fence is every so minutely twisted in it's length. On my tuit list is a home made fence from laminate material. Obviously I won't have the angle functionality, but I doubt I'll ever need it.

JBox is coming in nicely Sean, watching with interest.

Not seen the wood whisperer Olly, but his vids look like good info. I use the blue tape at work, it's so much better than the traditional lick it stuff, both licking it and also peeling it back off.

The veneer pressing came out ok, didn't quite get 2 edges glued properly so i used a needle and syringe and some cascamite, an iron to make the glue go off straight away as well.

Finished off the drawer joints and started veneering them. Will finish the cross banding tomorrow.

Cleaning the birds eye on the drawer front.
dscf23small-0.jpg

Crossbanding the ebony, worst job by far, the longest piece i did in one go was only about 30mm.
dscf23small-1.jpg

I used an iron and cascamite.

Scraping back.
dscf23small-3.jpg

Then this happened  pipper.
dscf23small-4.jpg

Managed to glue it back together though.

Looking good Sean. It's becoming compelling reading for me as I'm planning my first jewellery box for a 50th birthday present, but not sure I'll be up to this standard just yet.

Thanks for taking the time to post.

Jon

I mounted an off cut of rosewood with hot melt glue on the lathe for my knobs.
dscf23small-0-1.jpg

I can never seem to turn 2 items the same, but these are nearly there.
dscf23small-2-1.jpg

Here is the tray with a coat of lemon oil.
dscf23small-3-1.jpg

Drawer finished.
dscf23small-4-1.jpg

I have also danish oiled the box and lid. 2 or 3 more coats and i'm done.

Looking really good Sean.

You`ve certainly not messed about.

I look forward to seeing the finished article.

Good luck with the competition.

Danish oil for the box, insides have had a splash of lemon oil, some red felt round card to finish it off, and i brass plaque which i engraved with someone else's engraving machine. Customer seems happy so that's all that matters.

Should have got some better photos, but i was rushing

Excellent, well designed and executed, I like the bow front lid and the walnut/maple has come out well.

I take the customer was insistent on the "Dorothy" plaque? Again personal taste, but for me that really spoils the front of the box, I'd have had it on the underside of the lid.

One last thing, you're not in intermediate are you  If so I'm in trouble

Beautiful box Sean.

The contrasting timbers look great.

Excellent workmanship worthy of any competition.

Lovely job Sean. I hope you've not entered it in the Beginner or Intermediate class or I'm gonna withdraw!

Roy.
