Laptops can be temperamental beasties at the best of times....
Its weird for your mouse to have died though....there isn't really much to go wrong with a mouse...I know its a daft question but have you checked to make sure it is plugged in the back OK? Could be worth just unplugging it and then plugging back in in case the driver has gone haywire....Worth a go...

Thanks Timmo, problem partially solved, The mouse works if I plug in using a usb port, but if the adaptor is on the usb and plugged in to the back of the PC it fails.
So its a loose connection inside or faulty adaptor or other?

Alrighty - so it is a usb mouse and you have been using a usb to ps/2 adaptor....Could be a loose connection on the mobo or the adaptor could be goosed....if you have a spare usb slot then its probably best to just go with that...if not then I would recommend getting a usb splitter as opposed to another usb / ps/2 adaptor in case it is a loose connection on the mobo...
Hope that helps.

Thanks again Timmo, the keyboard had got an adaptor as well, can I use that just to see if its the adaptor that is the trouble, or leave best alone?
bearing in mind that the keyboard failed at the same time but for only 12 hours.

I'd give it a go and try the adaptor from the keyboard and see if that works just for your own peace of mind....in computer terms there is very little that can go wrong with the mouse and the keyboard themselves but you are more likely to have problems with the drivers if anything...has anyone been pluggin in any other usb devices (pen drives) into your PC as this may have upset the drivers...although if you do just have simple keyboard and mouse then they should be detected automatically and the drivers sorted accordingly.....

OK, tried the mouse using the keyboard adaptor no joy.

went back and put the keyboard adaptor and usb in and then the keyboard wouldn't work.

Switched off again and replugged keyboard back in worked ok.

So. then mouse connection at back of pc is U.S.?

Sounds like it....I'd stick to the USB on the mouse if you can....

On a lot of machines you can plug in a USB mouse or keyboard while the machine is on and it will be picked up and work but if you are using the PS2 sockets, then a reboot or in some case a power cycle is require to pick then up. This depends on the motherboard and the driver combination.

Dave that is a good point...I should have put about needing to reboot after changing / replacing the PS/2, stupidly on my part I had just assumed that DW would have swapped the adaptors around before powering back up but I know I shouldn't assume these things
Sorry if I caused confusion...
Cheers

Because I was messing aound with ps2 connections I shut down and turned the power off each time I messed around.
