I am making some interior window frames which sit inside french style windows ( open inwards). They are acting as secondary glazing as it is a period style of house with thin glass. Can anyone tell me where to get a set of plans for the basic construction of a window frame. I seem to be getting a bit stuck with the mouldings, rebates, scribes or mitres. I have done the 1st one but it took ages and I think I am going about it in the wrong order.....thanks giff :?

Not sure about where to get plans but the most basic way to produce a frame is to just screw and glue your square section frame together and use plant on rebates afterwards. The next basic way is to rebate your timber first then screw and glue together again then use a router to put your chosen moulding on, although this does not look anywhere near as good as a traditional mortice & tennon scribed joint. Just depends on how it needs to look or if it needs to match in to anything original. Hope this helps.

That's cheating ! Thanks S for the advice, I could do will all I can get! I am moulding the sections and cutting mortice and tenons but seem to get a problem on the assembly bit....do the rebates and moulds need to be stopped if they are done in the section...do you know how this is done on a spindle moulder ? Thanks giff

There aren't stopped on a spindle moulder. It is done using matching profile & scribe cutters.

Thanks pro shop..what happens to the rebates. Are they part of the scribe cutter ? g

Sorry to sound a bit stupid....so can I not rebate through the whole section before assembly ? Do I have to rebate after it's assembled and chisel the corners out..giff

Yes that's what you do, create the scribe, then the moulding, then the rebate,
drill out the mortice and finish the tennon (if your making a mortice & tennon joint) and then assemble it to all together.

Does this help
