Hi Folks,

Had another go a t a platter with my new Sorbey texturing tool.

This is Elm and measures 250mmx15mm, finish on bottom is FP, bowl and inner/oter rim in FP, texturing treated with boiled linseed oil for contrast.

C&C welcome as usual.

Cheers,

Lee.

Very nice! I was going to say that I did not like the foot when I saw the second picture, but when I saw the third photo I realised that it makes it float wonderfully!

Attractive and well finished piece Lee, good work on the texturing to get such an even figuring over such a wide area and diameter.

That looks excellent. You are definitely getting the hang of 'ordinary things now. Platters aren't the easiest to get a good clean finish on but you have managed it. The rim looks almost like fabric in the photo.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the kind remarks.

I really worked hard on this piece in every area and I think I am pleased with the end result.

A really enjoyable piece this.

Cheers,

Lee.

Very nice indeed Lee. You've really got the form right on this, as Frugal says, it looks like it is floating and the flow of the line is perfectly uninterrupted. Tho, I do think the foot is a tad too small. I know this was probably not a piece 'for use', but it will still make it quite unstable. Just a minor point tho Lee, you should be proud of this one!

Hi Tom,

You're right about the foot but it's more of a display piece.

I have acutally sort of undercut the foot so it tucks into the bottom a wee bit, helps with the floating thing as you can't really see it from side on.

Thanks,

Lee.

Hi Lee,

Any chance of a close up of the texturing ?

Tha rest of the platter looks great

Think you've definitely cracked the texturing Lee nice one!.
At work at the mo looking using an iPod touch so not the best screen to be looking at turnings on will have a better look later.

Nice comments guys, Cheers.

Stevebuk, Took some photos of this against my blue camera tent background and they really do make it pop, but unfortuantely there's too much reflection and the photos look mince!

Maybe I'll post 'em anayway or try again for those who are interested.

Cheers,

Lee.

Hi Lightweeder,

I think so too.

I'm beginning to excersise a lot of patience which is allowing me to concentrate on tool control and finish.

Just as an idea of how things have changed I would say for this piece turning/finishing was in the range of 30%/70%. Really focused on getting a good finish and it helped that I started with a very clear design in mind.

Although the photo isn't very good, here's a pic against a contrasting background:

Lovely platter, Lee. Looks like you have a great finish on it, a lovely form, and the wide textured band is very effective indeed on the elm.
