Been cutting up the Yew i've got the last few days, and most of the main trunk Seems to have grown in 3-4 seperate parts, with all soil-rot up the middle.
Just wondered if this is typical of Yew.
Does seem to be a lot of wastage on it,or fuel for the burner
Would welcome some ideas as to what i could turn from it being the unusual shapes it is too. :D

It's a common problem with yew, some yew trees are remarkably clean yet others have all sorts of inclusions.

fuel for the burner!!!! time to get small minded  Pen blanks need only be 110mm long

I was only quoting what DaveL had said on an earlier post Graham about waste and fuel.
"Don't panic Mr Mainwearing" :D
I think i'll be having loads of pen blanks at the moment.Your welcome to some if you like Graham.
The smaller branches seem fine so hope to get some decent sizes from those :D

Don't throw it away or burn it. Yew comes up really lovely and the spilts, inclusions etc can be really beautiful. It can be a bit fragile and you need to run slow with sharp tools but it's worth it.

This has a split from top to bottom running with the grain. I left it fairly thick for stability at about 5mm (I'm sure an expert would have gone much thinner)

Yew seems a favourite for natural edge vases as well due to the freaky shapes the outside takes. Look at some of these

HI

Yew is a wonderful wood and turns and finishes beautifully. You will get splits and shakes in it but theses can add to the beauty of the piece. Depending on the size you can fill them with super glue and either brass or gold coloured fillings.

If you have any bits where the trunk is starting to split try something like this.

Just remember to use plenty of superglue in the parts where the bark inclusions are.

After seeing the second picture, not quite sure how it's all staying together,though...

Thanks for the link Pete. Some lovely pieces on there
And i won't be throwing it away, just the rot and the dirt.

John thanks for showing those pieces, very nice :D
Something to aim for.

I have turned Yew before,in fact i think it was the last piece i turned, seems ages ago  which is why i bought all that my tree surgeon had,and yes it is one of my favourites.
Just a lot of work to get some decent pieces from the trunk

Did you know that Yew is used for a cure for Cancer.I didn't

But Paul I said that about a pile of sawdust from the chain saw, not bits big enough to keep Graham in stock for a month or more.
