Hi people

Thought I would put fingers to keyboard and give my reasons for the 2011 Challenge / Competition

It is slightly linked to the Critique post I also started

Here goes

I have notice the forum ( Wood turning bit ) was slowing down , not many new posts and not many photos of work :(

In a effort to kick start things I decided to see if we had any interest in a 12 monthly challenge , and BOY O BOY what a response  Thank you all very much

I am pleased to read the comments and enthusiasm regarding the competition

My reasoning behind the scoring , I think 1st 2nd 3rd are obvious but 1 point for entering means you will indeed end up with 12 well deserved points and maybe even more if you get a placing

Photos ?

Why only 3 ? so we all have the same amount , sounds fair 1 from above one side on and one of the bottom , ( I said Bottom  )

Why the small file size , It again gives us a level playing field , no better quality images other than choice of lighting

Why NO CRITIQUE until after the results , I think its best this way as it will not influence or demoralise anyone or perhaps change the Judges view

Why no entry's to be posted until after 24th January , again so people don't get to Familiar with looking at the same items for 3 weeks then in the last week something new pops up

I too am very much looking forward to this , and a member summed it up by saying " 30 to 40 new items to look forward too each month "

So it looks like the forum will be buzzing in 2011

Enough of my ramblings , better go and do a bit more on my entry

As a self taught turner of 6 months, this site has been my "club"
I have found members supportive and keen to help and very welcoming and tolerant of seemingly simple or obvious questions.
The sharing of triumphs and tribulations have inspired and helped with the seemingly insoluble.
The challenge will make me try new and different things all of which will be to my improvement and overall make me a better (and pardon the term) - an all round - better turner for the trying.
Seeing what others do speeds my learning curve
For all of these reasons I welcome the challenge and thank you for arranging it and you are right there does seem to be a buzz on the forum.
Here's to an enjoyable year at the lathe!
Regards
Colin

All I will say is well done Allen for taking the initiative and being prepared to organise this - I take my hat off to you.

Even as a beginner, it will certainly encourage me to leave the nice warm fire and the comfy chair, and get out to the lathe. Great idea. Well done Blister.

Good idea, Blister. When I have something worthy, I will definitely take part.

I just hope the forum is still going by then;)

Blister, I've been thinking about the three pictures bit...the bottom is obvious but can you give a little guidance on what you mean by side and top? I'm guessing that you don't mean in the engineering sense, i.e. a totally flat on Side view and a picture which is taken from directly above the bowl?

Would it be possible to allow an additional fourth picture which is free - your best side type picture to allow people to either zoom in on something (I'm thinking in terms of the decorating one where people may want to show the beautifully crisp piercing they managed etc) or a lovely bit of grain or maybe for natural edges there's a shot which brings out something special etc?

If you were to allow this it wouldn't add too much to your judges viewing load and will give people that little bit of extra flexibility...
