The goblet I made for the club competition split at the foot so I had to make another one. Someone had given me a billet of olive so I made this with it,

Olive, 12" tall 2" top dia. 1 1/3rd dia base (as per regulations) stem is 5mm

Out of 11 entries in the novice section I came first :eek:ccasion5: . Really chuffed

Pete

Now that is lovely Pete, no wonder you came first. i love olive wood, the colour is striking and the grain is superb.
We had a chap at our club who had made a jig to stretch the wood outwards as this stopped the flexing when going that thin on the stem.
well done mate

Hi Pete

WOW realy stunning piece of work. :D :D :D
Glad you got first prize, justly deserved.
Olive is such a beautiful wood I use it when I can get any for some of my pens. Love the smell you get from it. The only drawback with it is make sure that you clean off every last trace of it from any metal work and tools and wipe down with an oily rag as well, otherwise every thing goes rusty. It's something to do with the acids in the wood.

Keep up the good work

Malcolm

Don't get too cocky me old son, now your in the intermediate section.

Nice one Pete, feels good don' it. Ill wind and all that, just as well the first one cracked, but don't use wet wood in future.

Thats a stunning goblet Pete - well done :D :D :D :D

The shape is really good.

A well deserved result.

Thanks guys. I will need to get 1st three times before upgrading to Intermediate Tam. The quality of work is really excellent so I'm in no hurry. Joining a club and seeing what others are producing has made me very aware of my own weaknesses so to get this was a real compliment. Better than having stuff sold as it was judged by people who really know what they are doing. Next month is an open one so goodness knows what I'll do. have been wondering about one of Bob's airoplane boxes with an oriental touch...have to branch into new territory though and actually plan it.

Pete

Hi Pete,
Just seen your winning goblet and what a superb example well done.
Over the past couple of years I have entered many of the club competitions and the best result so far is a second place. I never fail to be amazed at the quality and ingenuity of my fellow members and mentors but if we don't compete we cannot measure our improvements.
Congratulations and regards,
Ian
