Which type of woods are best

as the title suggests, I'm new to this, up to now I've only used ply wood, but out of interest what type of wood suits scroll machines best in terms of neat cuts and ease etc.

Hi Brian. Thanks for all that info, you even answered my next question, I'd never of thought about charity shops. I can definitely see the addiction of scrolling.
