Hi everyone,

I don't really need a coping saw everyday. As the bandsaw is there and thats quicker and easier. But recently, at work the bandsaw has been out of order for a few hours, and I've had to struggle along with a cheap and nasty pound shop coping saw, I brought, just incase. Its rubbish! But... first time since I finished my apprentiship, I've ever had to use a coping saw. So as you can see, I don't need one thats going to be perfect or more to the point reallyexpensive. I just want a decent one that will last a few years with only occasional use.

I've seen this one from IRWIN for about £9.39 :

Would this one be any good? What others would you recommend? I'm willing to spend about £20 (as im guessing I can get one that with do a basic but good job for this price)? If you recommended one on a budget costs more, still please post. Links would be helpful, thanks.

Simon.

Personally I think you will find the best one you can get, pound for pound, is the eclipse. As a standard coping saw, not one of those long, mad new-fangled things!!

Sim,

I offered you a decent one for free and you bluddy ignored me!!
I carried it around Stoneleigh show all fugging day!
Its still available if you want

Irwin is not necessarily a sign of quality. I bought a hacksaw that disintegrated on 2nd use. Their XP clamps are the dogs whatsits tho.

Hi,

If you want a coping saw that works you need to make one of these

You can put loads of tension on the blade keeping it straight and making it more accurate.

Rob,

He doesn't need to BUY one, just collect the damn thing - or a Millers Falls if he wants it.

Eclipse. Very common at boot sales. Should cost a quid.

Old ones are slightly more rigid (so more blade tension) than the new ones.

I am sorry, I did post up on the forum on the friday night I wasn't going to be able to make it. Family life dictated the weekend unfortunatley and I was sad I didn't get to go the show, I'd been bangin on about it all week!

What about these eclispe's then? Is this the one we're talking about:
http://www.spear-and-jackson.com/en/eclipse-coping-saw
How much would I expect to pay for one of these? And what about replacement blades, and how much shoud I expect to pay?

Thanks for all the replies.

I had a lot of trouble actually buying an Eclipse, so I bought a Silverline (binjob) and then an Axminster (ok) - but then I found my Eclipse again, so all was happy.

I really don't think I would go to the trouble of making a coping saw...

Okay, two of spear & jacksons dealers are close by to me. One is a 5minute walk and the other is a customer we supply loads of joinery to! So I might even try and get it as a freebie!

At the moment, for me, making tools isn't really an option. My tools need to be of reasonable quality (for my private shop, making furniture), but at the same time rough n ready for anything, for the day job!

another vote for the eclipse! once saw a few in a bargin bin in B&Q at pound a go, but already having two at home  i resisted. blades should be about 2.50 a pack of 10? expensive but only when you snap then
