I need a chuck for my axminster awvsl1000 and just don't know what one to get :? Looked at supernova2,sorby patriot and axminsters own. The sorby seems to come with dovetail jaws and a screw chuck and the supernova with dovetail jaws and pin jaws. Prices are all much the same(as I'm sure you know). Any tips as to which might be best?

cheers johnny.t.

Don't have one myself, (no adaptors for my lathe) but having looked one over I would go for the Patriot, the auxiliary jaw fixings are compatible with the Nova so giving you a wide range of alternate jaw combinations, and it's British.

I bought my Patriot chuck about 12 months ago and have been very pleased with it, there is a good selection of alternative jaws for this chuck.I bought a set of 38mm (£31.00)for mine at the Stoneleigh show and I can tackle most jobs with what I have.

I thought the screw chuck which came with it was a bit on the big side but I use a home made one for the smaller items, but its ok for bowls.

When I was fitting the adaptor on my new chuck the grub screw supplied was quite short and dropped into the back of the chuck, (only had to take the back plate off) I told Sorbys about it and they gave me a longer grub screw, they probably supply the longer screws now with the chuck.

I believe jaws are interchangeable with the Supernova chuck.
The red rubber band which goes round the chuck snapped on mine but had a replacement in the post next morning, excellent service from Sorby

Thanks Chas and Dave(never thought I'd say that! rabbit rabbit rabbit  ) Seriously though, could you tell me the purpose of the rubber band around the patriot? As they seem to be snapping alot.

I've been very pleased with my Patriot over the last couple of months.
Lovely piece of engineering - and its British made.

Easy to use - with the single hex T-bar you don't need three hands to fit the workpiece in to the chuck.

Also has a multitude of accessories to buy with it (I had mine from http://www.turnerstoolbox.com - excellent service)
I have since bought a mini screw chuck (which I admit that I have not used yet as the supplied screw has been fine
for all the bowls I have turned so far) dovetailed faceplate ring, and also a
set of 1 3/8" jaws for the smaller projects.

The handiest thing is that it will also allow you to fit a prong centre in the jaws so that you
don't have to keep taking the chuck on and off when spindle turning.

As for the rubber band - it is supposed to be a safety feature but I think it is more for advertising purposes
as ther are (as with any chuck) still many sharp bits to rattle your fingers on.....

I like my Patriot, although my only alternative experience is with a Supernova and a Record collet chuck. Always fantastic customer service from Sorby.

Had my patriot chuck now for about 12 months, bought it for around £125 from Kendal Tools, it's fitted to my perform CCBL lathe and since I've had it I haven't looked back. Most of the items I've turned up to now have been done using the supplied jaws, but I dare say that will change in the future !

regards

Steve :)

I too got a Patriot, a few weeks ago when changing to a new lathe.

I previously had a K10 Axminster, which seemed to work fine, the only thing that I personally found slightly 'fiddly' was the need for '3 Hands' to operate the tommy-bar, the C Spanner and to hold the workpiece all at once.

The Patriot does away with that, being operated with the Ball-Allen that comes with it, leaving your free hand to control the workpiece itself during chucking.

I've only got the jaws that came with it - as time goes on, and skills improve hopefully, I think I'll probably add to the jaws, and I must say, I do fancy the Wobble-Chuck for it, just for a bit of a 'play', but I believe its not going to be available until early 2009.

As mentioned already, its Sorby, and as such its up to their usual A1 Standard, beautifully engineerd and made, and as Chas said, its British.

I did look at some other options when trying to decide, it came to a coin-toss between a Nova and the Patriot for me. And as I like every Robert Sorby Chisel and gouge I've got, above all others.... I thought Go with the Sorby chuck and you can't go far wrong.

Very pleased with it so far, I have to say. :D

i've got the k10 from axminster found it easy to use one hand to use the key and one hand to hold the work not a problem price was good too £119.94 :D

Although the price is right lurker, the jaw selection offered is limited, does anyone know for a fact whether the Rutlands jaws are compatible with other brands such as the Sorby or Nova?

There is also the issue of the thread adapters should you upgrade your lathe. There only appears to be 2 options.

Thanks for all the replies, I've ended up going for a supernova2, mainly because it comes with a free set of pin jaws as well as the standard dovetail set and screw. Now I've got to hang around at home tomorrow for the delivery van :D Oh it was 129+7.50 delivery.
cheers johnny
