Hi all
Hope everyone had a good christmas?. I`ve a new lathe on order which has a headstock M33 x 3.5 thread and I`m wanting a new chuck as my Supernova 2 won`t fit (although I gather it can with an exsert(?) but that seems a bit iffy) I would like to make use of the few jaw sets I have for the Supernova and the Versachuck from Toolpost seems a good one having different inserts for various jaw sets and wondered if folk on the forum have got one and what they thought? Checking out a Supernova 2 in the size I want seems to be a special order so not sure about that either but any comments welcome.
Cheers
Steve :ho2

Hi Paul
Ta for that. I`d not thought of the Patriot so will have to check that one out. Not sure whats different to the Supernova chuck. Seems to be an odd size for some reason for the Supernova some retailers not stocking it some saying special order ??. I went for the Vicmarc vl175 eventually, thought sod it and pushed the boat out expected late Feb/early March  . Have to live off bread and jam for a bit now  I have also thought about the Vicmarc chucks but would have to change all my jaw sets but the Versa chuck ticks a few boxes. Steve from the other posting thought his Patriot a bit smaller than he thought it would be which has got me thinking if it would be a suitable match for the vl175?
Regards
Steve

Nice lathe Steve :D
What made you decide on that make/model :?:
I bet you can't wait.
I recently bought a second hand VM100 chuck and on the few occasions i've used it so far,it is a very nice chuck, better i would say than my SN2.
It seems a lot smoother action on the jaws.
I believe they come in three different sizes the 100 been the smallest,to suit different types of work.

Hiya Steve, Nice buy I had a run on the 300 a couple of weeks ago super. I bought the Nova 1624-44 which included a dedicated M 33 x3.5 Supernova2 chuck. I think if you want a dedicated chuck be it Supernova or the Sorby Patriot you have to order them. At least that was what I was told when I was buying a Patriot If you buy either off the shelf you will be given one with an Insert. I hope I am wrong. Lots of Happy Turning with your new Lathe. REgards Boysie

PS If its a case you have to change your Chuck give me a shout about any jaws you need to sell Boysie PM of course.

It wasn`t until I actually saw one `in the flesh` that I really liked the look of it having only seen them in pictures but a guy fairly local to me let me have a look at his (bought in 2002) and when I had a go on it that clinched it, lovely machine and built like a brick whatsit, the price was more than I wanted to pay but it just winked at me and that was it   .

Yes will PM you if I can`t use the jaws

I had a SN2, and got the exert to use this on my VicMarc which has worked very well. Recently got a good deal on a threaded Patriot, and it's equally nice. Interchangable.

Not so keen on the Versachuck ... no end-stop on the jaws means if you open it far enough they just fall off ... this happened using large bowl jaws when I switched on which thankfully only destroyed an almost-finished large bowl ... could have been VERY nasty!

Cheers

So the Supernova is ok with an exert? good I had heard it made it protrude too far from the headstock, Think I`ll still get another chuck as well. Never thought about no end stop on the Versachuck so thanks for that.
Whats to choose between a new SN2 or a Patriot do you think as they seem pretty much the same in photos?. Charnwood do a chuck (W840) but I`m back to the extra SN jaws problem again.

Steve

The Patriot are made in England by Sorby. They started making them when Teknatool started getting the SN2 produced in China. The jaws etc are interchangeable.

I've said it before.... the Patriot is a lovely piece of engineering and I've been very happy with it since September.
It came with a screw chuck which I use initially for all my bowls
(except the whoppers) and I have since since purchased a smaller set of jaws for tinier projects.

The single-handed operation with the big friendly T-bar hex key makes fixing the workpiece in the jaws a doddle.

Mine was £130 including screw chuck and 2" jaws from Turners Toolbox.

Hi Gasmansteve
I have a Vicmarc 175 and a Patriot with M33 x 3.5 exert (best get it from Poolewood) and the Patriot with exert is quite solid. But I also have a Vicmarc 120 chuck and there is no comparison. The Vicmarc chuck is far better. Very accurate, strong as a horse, very well made and finished. By contrats the jaw slides on the Patriot have quite a lot of play and the quality isn't the same. Costs less, but not that much.

Steve,

Well done on the lathe choice - I have a viccy 300 short bed and I am really pleased with it.

One thing you may want to keep in mind - the Vicmarc (and axminster bosses with the M33 thread made for the Viccy for their super precision chuck) have the retention grove machined into them. This is so you can fit the collar to retain the chuck as an additional safety feature when turning large pieces or an essential when using the lathe in reverse.

If you go down the Axminster route speak to Phil first as Axminster were not machining the bore correctly so they ran out of clearence before the check mated with the shoulder on the headstock. I think this has been sorted now but worth checking. Jason in APTC shop in Axmister will also be able to advise.

It may also be possible to get this grove machined into the Versachuck boss as long as it is long enough - again Phil will be able to advise on dimenstions etc.

Best of luck and enjoy!

Simon.

Hi Simon
Ta for that. I did think of the precision chuck from Axminster but got a confusing reply from them when I asked about the two different 33x3.5 fittings they supply? see below

Dear Sir

Thank you for your email

The difference is the size in the register, on the T38W there was no register originally. Now we have reworked them so there is, the important question is on your Vicmarc lathe, has it got the double c-ring clamping system to clamp backplates, faceplates etc to the spindle or just a thread. If its the C-ring system then you need the T38V which is specific to Vicmarc lathes with that system.

I never took a close look at the vl175 headstock fitting I saw to suss out what Axminster are trying to tell me ie C-ring system?? so not sure if their chuck will fit my lathe or not guess I`ll wait until I`ve got it first?
Regards
Steve

Hi Gasmansteve
If you are buying a new Vic 175 it has a semicircular groove cut into a raised section at the back of the spindle. There is a matching raised section and groove on the Vicmarc chuck backplate. When the chuck is attached the two raised sections with grooves sit side by side. The lathe comes supplied with a detachable circular collar that fits over both grooves and locks in place. This stops the chuck from winding off when the lathe is in reverse. It's a great feature. Some third party chucks have the special raised section and groove machined onto the backplate. I imagine that it the purpose of the special Axminster T38V fitting. I think all Vicmarc chucks have the feature built in.
You won't regret buying the Vic.
