Hello
I'me looking at buying a small hobby type band saw and need some recommendations.
I've got some mahogany (I think) planks which are 35mm thick, 165mm wide & 1000mm long and I want to cut these into strips 35mm X 2mm X1000mm. Which band saw would be appropriate to do this task without breaking the bank

If these planks have parallel sides, it may be quicker and easier to rip then down with a small table saw, better control over the timber and stiffer blade.

There's a Metabo BAS 260 on ebay at the moment well within your budget. Looks new but no fence. Being sold as a classified ad with invite to discuss with the seller. You could rig up a temporary fence until a proper one is located. Metabo is a good well respected German company.

Thanks for the quick replys

These planks are going to be used for planking on a model boat, my reasoning for a band saw was that it would also be able to be used for cutting the bulkheads ect from plywood which do not have strait sides but a slight concave shape.

If youre a complete newbie to bandsaws, I dont think you will have much success cutting 2 mm x35 mm thick laths in mahogany.
It can be done, but is not a task for a first timer.
I suggest a small table saw with a very sharp blade will be much better. Even finding a local woodworking business to cut it for you, or you would need to start cutting 4 mm thick and doing a lot of hand planing and sanding.
