To be honest, I only have 3 woodturning books, but they are all excellent :D . They are:

Woodturning - a foundation course (Keith Rowley)
Turning Green Wood (Michael O'Donnell)
Woodturning projects - a workshop guide to shapes (Mark Baker)

Just wondering whether there are some more gems out there...

If you fancy making boxes Chris Stotts book 'Turned Boxes 50 designs' is a good buy IMO There are loads out there, many repeat one another tho. I go on the Internet and bookmark galleries and sites on ceramics, glassware etc for inspiration. This is a good place to start with loads of different portfolios.

Hope this helps

I just reread Robert Chapman's 'Fresh approach' and remembered why it inspired me when I first read it. I also like Michael O'Donnell's Green wood turning, and 'Bowl turning techniques - a masterclass' by Tony Boase.

My favourites are:-

Mike Darlow - The Fundamentals of Woodturning
Lots of pictures and step-by-step how-to on the basics.

Phil Irons - Woodturning (Two In One Manuals)
A bit gimicky with the spiral binding in two sections top and bottom but
loads of info for a newcomer such as me and a friendly picture based format.
Lots of ideas for projects.

Keith Rowley - Woodturning, A Foundation Course.
A recent purchase after recommendations on the forum.
No colour but still many pics and very readable text.

What I must say though is, as good as all these books are and enjoyable to read, I have learned so much more from watching videos.
Next to having a pet turner to show you the ropes videos are the next best thing!

I've read quite a few of the books so far listed, but my personal favourites are:

Turning Wood with Richard Raffan

Turning Bowls with Richard Raffan

and

Woodturning - A Foundation Course by Keith Rowley

I like the Mike Darlow - The Fundamentals of Woodturning for his extremely techical explanations & illustrations of how tools cut wood, but didn't find his book so good for a beginner as other the three I mentioned above.
