All I would say is:
Don't buy from market stalls in the town/city.
Don't buy from eBay unless you really know what you are looking for and you know good from bad.
The two firms mentioned are not cheap, but then anything of value rarely is and they are reliable suppliers. Axminster Power Tools, stock a wide range of hand tools, at all price levels. Certainly good enough to get you going, and develop your skills.
Keep an eye on the 'for sale' section of the Forum. Sometimes good tools are on offer for a reasonable cost.
I'll have a look in my shop, and see what I have. I am at the ***-end of my woodworking life now, so I'd be glad to see them go to a good home!
