Know nothing about Axmin. (Although I bought my first jigsaw from them this week-a Bosch, simply on online recommendation, and Ax were about 10pc higher than cheapest, but bought from them 'cos you guys value there service), but having never used a jigsaw before, i wouldn't know what to ask them. However, they may have directed me towards a more profitable model, or, drawing from electronics experience, they may no little about the item beyond a standard sales pitch. I stand to be corrected, but in my lifetime, the highstreet merchants that excel have been few and far between, often necessitating travelling a fairly long distance.
I don't think we should ignore the centrally set rate system either :)

I've never been to an Axminster store, I just order by post from their superb catalogue, but I certainly hope they don't go down the Comet / Jessops etc route. That would be a major issue for me. I'm afraid I'm one of those who shop online rather than go and face the crowds in the High Street, especially in the run-up to Christmas. And as for the post-Christmas sales, well, not a chance.

Regarding the comments on cinemas though, I have to agree. The big cinemas have rather high entry charges, and then there's the cost of 'extras' such as popcorn and the tedium of sitting in the same seat for an extra 45 minutes or so simply to put up with adverts (I can do that at home). By the time you've paid for parking it can cost £25-£30 for two people. We have a local-ish cinema and public hall which charges about £3.50 entry, there's free parking, and the in-house shop charges sensible prices so people don't feel the need to buy their sweets etc elsewhere and take them into the cinema. It's not posh, but it is perfectly acceptable. They also have all the new releases and a great sound system - can't go wrong. You still get the adverts though. (For those of you in the area it's Brynaman Public Hall).

When it comes to adverts, we avoid them whenever we can by using a Freeview box (Humax) and watching recordings whenever possible. We got rid of Sky when Freeview became available, it was costing us about £25 - £30 a month for Sky Movies which were repeated nightly for the whole week, and then extra per 'box office' film. We felt really ripped off. Freeview really is free once you've bought the Humax box, and I don't miss the channels we can't now receive.

OK ramble over.

Don't think it would be an issue with Axminster, they have shops and a warehouse so if the shops closed everything could be obtained on - line.

Lots of folk will not get off there buttocks to go to a shop and prefer to sit and lounge on the Internet. Also prefer to text than speak. I guess if it carries on like this folk will get very fat, in many generations time will have no legs or vocal cords evolution tends to remove unwanted features. :(

Your post had me concerned thought AI might cause problems! :)

Thinking about TV adverts etc. Hi.Tech will soon sort that out if you continue to speed through those adverts, films will be made and the actress will be taking ten minutes to unpeel a bar of Imperial Leather toilet soap and the actor will take ten minutes to get a cigarette out of a packet and you will see a prominent brand. etc. :)

I see that illiteracy is still being taught at school,as Chems has proven. Woah is spelled WHOA an the breaks you want to pump is spelled BRAKES.
So maybe us old gits do know a thing or two.
