Thanks for that. I will get round to the band aids when I have a few minutes spare. I know there are fixes, I just really resent having to implement them against such a monumental MS **** up that's all. For some strange reason, this release has really got to me....grumpy old man status may have finally landed :)

Try Running Power 8 on your sons laptop. It's an alternate start menu app which behaves much like the classic windows.
Does not affect the basic software, just loads on top and can be closed at will to return to normal interface.

You can run it on win7 as well for a look see, it just replaces the start button, can be turned off at any timeh a right click on the icon.

Thanks for that link CHJ, I going to have a look at that as well.

I have win 7 on my current laptop and despite it's annoying traits at least it's been very stable unlike the pathetic Vista it came with.
I have a replacement on its way with Win 8 and from what I've seen I won't like it one bit but very difficult to buy a machine you want now without it (or paying over the odds). If I can sort a work around it'll save me the hassle of formatting and installing 7 which might compromise the warranty.

I'm with you Bob, I went into meltdown over Vista and I've stuck with XP on my desktop as I know when I switch it on that it's unlikely to spit out its dummy.
Nothing wrong with being a grumpy old man BTW

I would recommend you give Linux Mint a look. If you download a disc image and burn it to DVD, then you can try it out (albeit running slowly) from the dvd without installing anything. For anything other than silverlight it seems a very competent alternative built by a large army of people. I have asked for support on the forum several times, and have never had to wait for more than a day (sometimes far less) to get a solution suggested, implemented and up and running. What is your windows support like?

It may not suit all, but if it does suit you then you will be delighted. It runs far faster then WinXP/Win7, looks very much a classic windowing desktop, and gives you control over you machine (no more 'I am installing upgrades and there is nothing you can do about it').

I have been running linux for about a year, and have no regrets about switching. The wife has been running about three months and has no complaints (apart from the silverlight stuff). We run with NO antivirus and NO firewall (though both are available free if you want). We have had no virus attacks in that time.

I've been using Linux in one incarnation or another for many years. Now, for simplicity, I just use Ubuntu. The current machine has been up and running for well over a year - with no problems at all - it just works! Stick to the LTS (long time support) release and it will update itself as required without hassle.
