SWMBO has at long last decided she definitely wants a tablet, I've got an iPad which I like because I also have an iPhone, however she doesn't want an iPad, so what tablet can you guys recommend?

Google Nexus 7 or 10 depending on the size tablet you want.

Otherwise Asus also make decent ones. Honestly, there's not much to them really, as long as it's got a screen you like, then they all do facebook/iplayer/web/movies, which is 90% of a tablets usage.

I made my decision based on intended use cases. I wanted something OK, but that I could countenance losing or breaking - it's a portable thing that travels with me, this pretty much set my price range. I also didn't want to sign up for a new digital ecosystem, I use an Android phone, so I wanted an Android tablet - this makes for seamless app use between phone and tablet. If I used an iPhone I would probably have chosen differently. I've had a galaxy tab 2 7" for just over a year and I'm still pleased with it, occasionally it would be nice to have a larger display, but that goes against the portability. Be careful with cases/sleeves, some of them can double the bulk.

Another prerequisite was a removable memory card, I frequently work away in some pretty odd locations and it's nice to have the facility to store week's worth of videos and music, my corporate laptop is screwed down tighter than a tight thing so there's no chance of using that and I don't want to carry yet another laptop.

You need to remember that an android will not count as one of her 'five a day'

Errr, I think that coat with the long arms is mine.

I've recently been thinking about getting another tablet and after going round and round in circles checking all the specs and capabilities for me it came down to the Google Nexus 10 2. Far from the cheapest (though not as expensive as Apple). I did look at the iPad but lack of Adobe Flash and a proper GPS ruled it out for me as my most used apps need both.

Don't have any direct experience of anything other than iPads, but my brother has a tesco Hudl that he's very pleased with - he's in IT so is fairly picky about these things. Only a 7-incher, of course, so not much help if you want something bigger.

Cheers, Pete

I recommend the Nexus 7, I haven't used the new one but the earlier one is good, I expect the new one to be better and the reviews are good. The only thing I wish this had and the new one might have is a micro HDMI port.

No HDMI but they are SlimPort-enabled.

SlimPort-enabled mobile devices to deliver uncompressed 3D HD audio and video to large screen HDTVs and other displays over the existing mobile USB connector without draining the mobile devices’ batteries. SlimPort transmitters work with power saving CoolHD(TM) Analogix technology to enable HDTVs to play back digital media from any mobile device – including tablets, MP4 players, digital cameras, mobile phones and camcorders – using the existing mobile USB connector and existing display devices such as HDTVs, monitors and projectors.

We've got two nexus 7's in our family but I've just got the hudl and it's almost as good ,cheaper and it has upgradable memory and hdmi out

Have to say that I like the look of the Hudl (even though I detest Tesco).

The aspect ratio though is what distinguishes for me the difference between the iPad and the rest.

I just got myself a Samsung galaxy 8 inch and it's really excellent. My wife and kids all have ipads, but I think this is much better, and half the price. Android is a great OS now as well. You can add extra memory as well very cheaply if you need to and teh connectivity to othe rPC's etc is very good. The nexus is nice as well, but I did not like the smaller screen. I think the large ipads are too big, but its down to personal choice really. Read a few online reviews first, you dont want to just stand in front of them in a shop and make the decision.

I have had the Samsung Note 2 10.1 for a year now and it's an excellent all round tablet.
At work I use a Microsoft Surface Pro and it is superb. A full PC in a tablet package, the only drawback being battery life compared to other tablets.
