Hi all I am about to start a project to cover one of the walls of my kitchen with timber blocks of different sizes like 2x1,2x2,3x2,3x3,4x3 and 4x4 cut into different lengths from 1" to 3" to give a 3d effect with the endgrain facing outwards. It is a walnut kitchen with black granite worktop so i am looking for something that will contrast with the walnut and also have a nice endgrain and that will be stable to work with.Look foward to your ideas.

Sounds like a great idea!
Why not use black walnut? It has a pretty end grain (and the ocassional bit of sapwood for contrast).
Only thing to watch is expansion/contraction. You will get a LOT! How are you thinking of fixing it to the wall?
Philly :D

Philly's got a good idea. You might do something witha lot of different woods and do some sort of pattern. I'd trot off to the local cabinet makers and see what sort of scraps you can scrounge.

Hi I was thinking of using a lighter coloured timber for a contrast and was going to fix it to some plywood and then screw it to the wall
