hi all hopefully sold my sedgewick will be sorry to see it go. am looking to buy something to replace it around the £300 mark. thought about jet bench top thicknesser and a small bench top planer has anyone any experience with any of these machine or can offer some advise. i realise they are not going to be up to the sedgewick standard. never had any of these small machines before.

I own a 6" Rexon bench jointer, and have to highly recommend it - excellent for the money £150 from screwfix. I've planed everything from Tanalised 6x2 to curly maple, to Ash, and even heavy Yew - the blades are still in good nick.

It's a bit 'whiney' but has good dust extraction, a solid fence, and very easy to setup.

I've also heard very good things about Axminster C330 bench top thicknesser - i've had that noted down on my 'want' list if I ever require a thicknesser.

i dont think that lugo believes that i travel the width and breathe of the country to buy machines :?
cant seem to get him to reply to my various emails and posts
am interested in his sedgewick which is advertised on ebay

Maybe try and contact him with an email via ebay?

Lugo, I can testify that Mel is barking mad, and will travel to almost anywhere to get his grubby mits on any old cast iron :) I think he intends to melt them all down and build a super-combo machine - even inlcuding a cork-screw!!

Buy 2 separates my advice would be the SIP bench top planer 6" wide cast top and fence at £149.00. The fence is solid and travels full width. For thicknessers I would go for the SIP 12 thicknesser was £299 you may get this cheaper or the Ryobi one at £235.00 the SIP is better you can lock the rise and fall in position I not sure you can on the Ryobi

thanks for replies. if i cant find a cheap PT think i'll go the seperates root. anyone know anything about the jet thicknesser axminster sell and axminsters surfacer????the little one

There are some cheap bench planer thicknessers SIP, Woodstar(NMA) and fox do them they are small and lack good fences for planning the fences are just pressed steel or thin Ali profiles. The fences are also usually fixed so wear the blades close to the fence more. You can get a reasonable Maffel planer thicknesser but thats over £400.00 the others retail about £200 ish but IMO are a poor second best to separate machines

your downgrading from a rolls royce {sedgewick} to a mini
so what ever machine you choose you want get the performance that you had with the sedgewick, which came as standard with the rolls

I've seen the Axminster WP150 in the flesh, and it appears to be identical to the Rexon jointer that Byron B uses.

I very nearly bought separates (but ended up with a P/T, which worked out cheaper at the time). I considered the Metabo DH330, which Transtools are advertising on e-bay here at £270. Other forum users rated it highly.

Hope this helps.

I've had a lot of luck with the Dewalt / Elu combo units.

I started with a tired Dewalt (blue... fairly old) planer / thicknesser benchtop model (think it was called a DW1150).

After ruining a couple machine parts inside "aligning" it, I replaced the broken bits via some machinist OAPs (can't know enough of them!) and sold it. I got a similar Elu 1151 off eBay in better condition with its own legs and some spare blades.

While there are better dedicated units out there, it's hard for me to argue with the Elu's space, portability and overall usefulness for me.

Thanks, Jim
