There was a topic on here this morning about the tool companies that Irwin own that now seems to have disappeared anybody know what happened?

Thanks for the reply I thought it have gone due to something that I said.
I have to say that it would be good to see a thread on here that separates brand names from the actual manufactures.

It was removed at Phil's request. If you think there's value in the brand vs manufacturer issue (which I believe there is incidentally) then the best thing to do would be to start a thread that addresses it head on and it can grow and be added to over the years as changes take place in the tooling landscape.

Pretty much any manufacturer can apply any degree of material quality and processing sophistication - so it's actually the spec/QA
that matters, not the manufacturer.

For example, one might choose to plane, mill, blanchard grind, linish or surface grind the sole of a plane. Any substantial engineering plant will be able to do any of those, but they vary in speed, cost and result.

I suppose at the extreme low end, mass produced chisels might be stockpiled and have brand stickers put
on at time of delivery, but I don't think that happens with any (even half) decent tools..
