I love my Hegner scroll saw but I want to try some new things from the Internet (USA) that all quote 1/4" timber. I can't get any. Timber merchants tell me they only will plane down to 1/2". I have been using oak faced ply but that is not suitable for all applications. What does everyone else do?

Struggle, then normally post on here that they can't get any!

How much are you looking for and what sized pieces. I doubt that you will find it anywhere on the shelf. If you do it will likely be no use to you because it will have cupped.

most common wood scrollers use at that thickness is good quality birch plywood as it has good properties for scrolling

I buy panels from Hobbies Mahogany etc come in 4" wide by 18" or 2ft long,I have also used the tulip wood in 6 mm or 9 mm.It just gives you a bit of variation from using plywood.Forget what the people that live across THE POND can buy timber, here it can only be a dream.
