Hi all,

What colour of the above is nearest to ordinary plywood ? I thought I could buy "plywood edging" but it does not seem available. Everything is a species like Ash, Elm etc. What is the nearest to plywood

I will stain but not sure what colour.

Thanks

Well what sort of plywood? Birch, far eastern, Chinese, pine CDX they all look very different.

Not really sure to be honest.. Whatever is in stock. Maybe I will try again once I have bought it ?
And here's me thinking I could just buy "plywood edging".....what a dope.

Thanks for replying.

For far eastern plywoods you might be better off with mahogany veneer edging depending on the colour of the plywood - for birch I'd be looking at maple if I could get it. Normally I'd reckon to solid wood lip plywood because veneered edges always seem to crack and detach in use, but I tend to think in terms of heavy usage like pubs and so on. There was actually a type of edge banding which was popular in furniture and kitchens a few years ago called "Triplex". It looked like plywood. Maybe that's still available, although I recall it was 2mm or 3mm PVC and not pre-glued rather than the iron on stuff

Don't be quite so hasty to berate yourself, I'm certain I've seen edge banding with the lines on to mimic the side of plywood.... god only knows why anyone would use it... but there you go.

As far as which one... matching or contrasting / coloured is a deliberate design choice and totally down to you :)

For solid edging there are a number of application options other than simply gluing a strip of wood face on:

Router bit sets to make a shaped slot in the plywood edge with matching opposite cutter for the solid wood:

OK I'll bite, and I know it's bad form to answer a question with a question, but tell me why would you want to lip plywood to make it look like- plywood?

Well, the OP asked for an edging which matched the colour of plywood.............. TBH it was only meant as an aside. Personally I'd hardwood lip because that's far more durable and any hald decent teimber merchant holds lipping materials in stock. Trying to iron edging onto plywood seems to be asking for problems IMHO

As to the Multiplex/Triplex edge banding - we used to use it to edge MFC and MF-MDF items such as kitchen worktops, kitchen shelves, etc. It was fashionable..... for a while
