Picked up the logs Friday.

Turned the bowl Sunday Morning and left in Conservatory, dried while I watched unbelievable.

Remounted it this afternoon sanded and waxed, can't belive how much fun it was to turn green shaving every where.

I have lots more. :lol::lol:

Bowl is 6" ht x 14 1/2 " dia 2mm thick at rim thickening to 6 to 7 mm on base. Some of it looks like Marble.

Was I lucky or is it that easy????

That looks to be a really nice looking bowl Roger, that's well finished, and a nice clean colour. :D
Like the shape but think it would look better without the foot.Think i'd have preferred the curve to carry on round the base.

Very nice looking or should I say “marbleous”, bowl Roger, and I like the foot. If it were mine I might have brought the side down closer to the base, turned in sharper and left the foot larger in diameter but that is just personal taste. Nice colour.

I like green turning although everything I have turned green has gone well off round when dried

Hi Roger,

Looks like you did well with that haul of timber :D !! Are you sure its Horse Chestnut though? The HC I've seen and turned in the past has been a lot more yellow and bland than that. It looks more like Sycamore.... either way it looks like great wood!!! :D

The shape isn't to my taste, I think I prefer my curves more continuous top to bottom but that is totally my taste. The important thing is that you enjoyed doing it and from the "tone" of your post you loved it :D So keep it up!!

Cheers,

Richard

it wont be dry yet- even if it was a constant 2mm (which you should aim to have constant thickness for green turning success) from sunday overnight to monday it wont have dried all of the way through, it might have gone surface dry which will have allowed you to sand it and seal the moisture in with wax!! but it wont be throughly dry yet that will happen over the next few days when it might split.

Hi Roger,

Very nice, shape is not quite my personal taste but that is not important.

You obviously enjoyed making it so that is the most critical element. Whatever happens when it dries you have started to learn the process of green turning. Thats on my list of things to do, I have made one item in green oak and the movement on that was an eye opener

Regards,

Mike C

I love the wood. The form does not offend me but there is something not right. I think, as others said, it needs either some sort of foot or to be a bit 'squater' ?

I certainly can't argue with that then   Looks like the best HC I've seen - I'd keep it to yourself   (or send it to me  !!!)

Good luck with it, and keep those pictures coming!!

Cheers

Richard
