Went to work today, half way through the morning after a meeting with two suits (very suspicious) the boss came out and said he was closing as of midday, take our small kit and go. Looks like I am going to have more time to enjoy my new bench and workshop (see ugly duckling thread). Shame I have now got to fill up the space I created with the stuff from work. Oh well!

Still I'm only 59 with 19 years service, mortgauge paid, so it could be worse, its the young lads I feel sorry for. Onward into the future and all that.

Gareth

sorry to hear that. good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Not a bad age to retire if your pension fund is Ok?
I retired at 60, then was offered a very part time job that I couldn't really turn down - best move I ever made.

Good luck

Rod

Something similar happened to me (I was self employed tho. an agent) at 54 and it was the best thing to come my way.

Thanks guys, its nice to have some positive thoughts today, and I have often found that as one door shuts another opens, etc.

Time to take stock, sadly though I am one of those who was going to need some form of job after retirement.

Having no rent/mortgage to pay is a real boon in your situation.

Getting Working Tax Credits is no problem, you could be in the business of making concrete life jackets for all they care but for most people on WTC, getting housing benefit on a regular basis can be a nightmare.

The system is setup for you to be self employed at whatever you want to be. I hope you turn this into the best thing that ever happened to you.

I've had 3 jobs since leaving school, the last one I did for 24 years, a spinal problem means I will never work again, I take 24 tablets per day and I'm having counselling for depression, I now realise I have just moved into another faze of my life, it's just a different era, if you can treat it as that ie just a different stage in your life, hopefully it will not get you down, try to treat this as a positive, it's giving you the time to do all those things you have been putting off, spend more time with the wife/family etc etc.

I haven't worked since 2010, it is difficult, but with help and a positive outlook unemployment is bearable.

If you need to talk to anyone PM me.

All the best for the future.

Hey, don't look upon it as unemployment, think of it as early retirement instead. BUT don't expect to have more time on your hands - that doesn't always happen. I remember people saying to me things like ' I don't know how I ever found time to go to work, I'm so busy every day'. Well I didn't believe one word of that - until I retired myself. Now I know.
It seems that everything takes longer because you can take longer over everything. And that suits me fine. I retired at 55 and couldn't wait to 'get out'.

Good luck in your RETIREMENT.

I totally agree with others who have suggested you take a new step in your life and move on to enjoying yourself.

I got a full time job locally after taking "early retirement" from a job I'd had for nearly 30 years since leaving school and messed around for a few years with various plans and jobs and now I just have a 3-days-a-week part time job which pays for the housekeeping and a few extras.

I paid off my mortgage which at the time every "expert" told me was the wrong thing to do but I don't give a toss....I FEEL free and nobody can take my home from me now. The day you get those deeds is a wonderful day indeed!

My health has been a bit dodgy but I still plan as if every day is my last and my whole outlook has now changed for the better.

I love getting up now...and yes...you are more busy after you retire than you are before...I often wonder how I ever found time to work!

All the very best wishes my friend...and remember...there are people far worse of than yourself so you should enjoy your situation and make the most of it.

Thank you every one for your kind thoughts and optimistic outlooks. It was all bit of shock, we were still making brackets for a job we will never finish when the axe fell, so although we knew things were not good, there was no inclining that it was going to be yesterday, but at least we had no time to worry before hand. I'm told that is the way things are done these days so we don't go on the rampage, Oh well!

Thanks once again.

Gareth

I got laid off in 1980, five months before becoming a father. It was like the ground opening up to swallow me.

I swore that from then on, I would be my only employer and apart from a period of bad health, managed that till qualifying for pension credit.

Once self employed, I found losing the wage slavery to be liberating. ok times of longer hours and times of less money, sometimes both but it was MY life and no worries of being laid off.

Good luck and have fun.

I had to take early retirement 5 months before my 50th, 19 years ago. I had screwed my back up t work. I had said, for the 5 years between the accident and the package, that if I could get out of the ratrace I would make wooden toys. Now, I make just what I like and I will concur that there could never have been enough hours in the day for me to have gone to work

Enjoy yourself. Early retirement is the very best that can happen to almost anyone =D> =D>

This retiring lark at later than 65 is in my opinion mainly for the benefit of capitalism, it creates a larger economy and does not benefit the working man. Make do with less pension and have a longer life is my thought on the subject.

Time on this planet is better than money now.

just a thought, the job that you were working on, is it something you would be able to complete yourself ? Talk to the customer and whoever is administering the closedown.

Hope things workout for you.
