hello folks- i have turned some more of that burr oak today, there is some very nice figure on this piece which i have not seen before, its a long streak of burr/ripple figure - has anyone else seen this before?

Certainly different. The red may be some kind of contaminant, oak does stain easily but usually black. Whatever it is it's lovely. Have you pit it on the AWGB site?Possibly someone there has seen it before George.

HI Goerge

Looking at it reminds me of some burr elm and walnut I had which had similar patterns and grain in them.

Both pieces came from the base of the trunk as it was begining to spread out to the root.

George thinking about it,i got some Oak that had been lying on the ground for a few years today from my tree surgeon and this had the fungi/mushroom growing out between the bark and some of this is red in colour.Could this be the same sort of thing :? :?:

Don't know what might have caused it George but you have made the most of it, lovely piece again.

Cheers, Paul :D

George, as the figuring continues across at least 30-40 years growth I can only assume it is down to the origins of the burr buds (cancer) that has continued to sprout and fail over the years in the same location.

got a feeling it might be a disease of some description george, but wow its beautiful.

well the tree is part brown oak so somthing was obviously having a go at it- i'm not convinced that that is the reason for the streaks though :-k
