For the first box I used Birch Ply and half-lapped the corners, it was split and the edges cleaned up, the box was then veneered and an inner box made to hold the slip-on lid in place, it was then lined.
I make ring holders for the second box (solid Walnut and mitred corners) using high density foam which is wrapped in Sheep suede, the suede adds that bit of luxury and is thick enough to impart some cushioning.

You will need to make an accurate shooting board to do mitres or a jig for the table saw (youtube)

Cutting the lid off the box will mean the grain will match and more importantly the lid will definitely fit :D

that makes sense

this could be fun for a novice
bandsaw ..not up to job
tablesaw not up to job

choices are now:
somehow balance a tracksaw
get out a handsaw
maybe i should save the mock-up for a trial run

Steve

A tenon saw will do the job,,,one side at a time.

I would advise you get some better quality hardware from somewhere like Ian Hawthorne's........
