Wanted threads

Hi guys,

I am pretty new to forums so please forgive me if the questions below are dumb!

If you are wanting an item and start a thread (say for a ts200 saw) and someone replies they have one for sale and before the thread starter sees the reply; someone jumps in and pm's the guy who replied had one for sale. The thread starter then has no idea that item is then gone unless someone comments on the thread? Doesn't seem the right way to do stuff to me?

I know if someone started a thread wanting a ts200 and I had one for sale and inspired by the thread I would give the thread starter first option and then others after (even if they pm me first). Isn't that fair?

I agree fwiw, gentleman's rules imo. I can see where the mod's are coming from when Noel described his notion of treat it like a bulletin or other advert, because to have a classified system like AVForums (for eg) would be heavily mod-demanding.
But yes, I think it's wrong, and rude to jump in (sorry guys)

I agree, it's certainly not fair but I'm not sure what can be done, much as I alluded to in the bandsaw wanted thread. I think most members would play fair and wait a reasonable time for the OP to say yay or nay and then look at any any others expressing an interest. Of course a lot depends on the seller and the person jumping in with the cash.

We're currently looking at improving and updating the FS/Want board and we'll certainly see if we can address this or at least emphasize in the guidelines that members be as fair and understanding as possible.

I think that most members would be fair surely and give the OP first option but see no reason why others couldn't pm expressing interest in the event that the item remains unsold.
I did this when I sold my van as there were several interested. An agreement is just that and should be honoured even when offered more money. Down to the individual IMO!

There is another side to the coin however and surely similar morals must be applied to the OP if more than one item is available from different members! He wouldn't be expected to buy the first offered would he?

I don't see how it can be policed. :?

Some insist that all negotiating and offers are made via the thread, going to pm only when a deal has been struck to exchange confidential details. This would be more transparent and would help sellers as I've noticed for sale threads with a few 'pm sent' notifications and the items are still for sale. But like I said earlier, it will require more mod effort to enforce.

on the bandsaw thread, as one of the PM-ers I would like to point out that my PM stated that "if the OP is not interested, I would be". I would expect that the other one said likewise. We seem to be a pretty fair bunch here, and I dont see what could be done by mods to enforce any rules about who is sold what- they cant force a seller to sell or not sell to any particular member.

On another forum that I frequent, the sales and wants exist in a forum where the rule is 'no replies'. Any replies would be deleted by the Mods. That way if someone responds to a WTB then it HAS to be by PM. No-one else sees the response and the gentlemans rules are enforced. (A desirable state of affairs in my opinion).

I am not sure how much mod--time might be taken up by enforciing the 'no replies' rule though.

you should be able to now, you are up to about 25 i think. 20 of which are whining about the for sale/wanted section.

The practical thing is to ask anyone genuinely responding to do so by PM. If you do post a "wanted" ad and you do get a reply, there's a moral obligation to update the main thread, to stop people wasting their time, along the lines of, "I've got one, here are a few pics..." when the original need has been met.

On the whole, people are kind and decent on here, and it shows (to their credit). We've seen a few commercial trolls, and some sharp practice in the past, but generally they stand out as exceptions to the general behaviour.

I think it's important, though, to not discourage the first time posters with something to dispose of. It's true some of those will be people trying to make 'a quick buck,' but there's another sort too, those disposing of a workshop left behind by someone who's passed away. It's quite common, and very often they're trying to find the right home for things by offering them here.

The forum rules make good sense to me. Pictures really aren't that hard to do any more with camera 'phones etc., and I can see a balance needs to be struck between allowing members to trade things between each other and commercial abuse. After all this site is free to us, covered by the effort the mods put in and the commercial sponsorship it gets. If free adverts ever compete, the paid-for revenue will dry up and that will possibly be the end of the line, which would be a great shame.
