I know their prices were a little bouncy last year (having done a search) but the APTC web site now lists NO Veritas planes (and only 29 Veritas products of any kind)

Anyone know anything?

I've often thought that Veritas stuff was over priced - maybe APTC don't sell much of their gear so that's why not a lot is in the catalogue. I also had a look recently for the organic Aussie finishing oils which have been in there for the last couple of years - not a sniff in the current catalogue - Rob

They've probably thought that now Philly's bought everything in their catalogue, they can start reducing their stock levels

I don't 'know' anything, but I suspect the recent emphasis on Lie-Neilsen planes may have something to do with the absence of the Veritas range.

I have no idea whose decision that would have been; I can see where any of the three companies involved may have wanted an exclusive arrangement.

Rutlands have now of course started selling Veritas stuff (or at least much more Veritas stuff, if they sold some before). Coincidence?

I suspect that we are seeing a trend in retail outlets choosing to stock only certain makes. When you look at the range of good quality planes now available from Clifton, Veritas and Lie Nielsen, we are spoilt for choice but I suspect it is quite uneconomic for shops to stock them all. When I bought my Clifton #6 recently from Buck & Ryan in Guildford it was the last Clifton plane they had. They told me that they were only stocking Veritas from now on - but they could order me Clifton planes if I wanted them.

It's a disappointing trend from the users point of view but probably inevitable now that we've gone from having no decent planes available to a situation where three makers are churning out quality stuff.

I dare you to be more precise on that Rob. huh huh.

Does Rob's avatar give us any clues? Those things don't look like any Veritas spokeshaves I've seen before.

I go this terrible itch for a ...

T&G Plane.
A combo plane
A great dado plane

Now Rob, you gonna scratch any of those itches soon or am I gonna have to go ebay'in?

Rob, your new avatar shows four spokeshaves... What's the new one?

The spokeshave looking things in Rob's avatar look to me like they're the wrong colour for the spokeshaves already in the Veritas line. They're not chair devils are they?

Don't expect a straight answer he's being very cryptic these days, is our Rob, much worse than usual though a combination plane that easily does tounge and grooves would be nice.

Hi Denis -

Well....none of them are spokeshaves, so I guess that makes 'em all new... I didn't have a picture handy of the new "spokeshave"....

(just back from a day's filming of a reality TV show...)
(PS - Mirboo's correct - but there's a second set missing (sort of))

Getting back to the original query (just about catching up again) Axminster have never stocked the Veritas planes ('cept maybe the edge trimming one and oddities that really don't count). I tried a little customer pressure on them way back (when I didn't know I could badger el Presidente directly about it  ) and was told with LN, Clifton, Japanese and (hah!) Stanley they considered they had all the bases covered and weren't planning to add another line to their range. Judging from Martin's hint it seems that maybe that policy has changed; perhaps in the face of economic reality? viz: the customer wants enough of the make they don't have to have dented their sales.

Meanwhile I see Rutlands was mentioned. They seem to be embracing the hand plane thing in a Big Way. Not my favourite store in the past, it has to be said, but recent additions have scratched a couple of plane itches I've had for a long time where other suppliers have failed. All credit to them.

Cheers, Alf

Glad to see el Presidente back on form.... I think.
