Anybody got any ideas to give that old look to an Oak side board made in American Oak. I was recommended to use crystals but am having problems with consistancy (patchy), even though its the same mix. I have tried some dyes but not quite found the right colour and I tend to mess that up as well (patchy). Advice!!
And would you use oil, wax, combination or varnish to finish?
Its the one area i always fall down on.

Not stripped, I just built it! I always seem to mess up the final finish. looks easy on youtube!!

Water stains do not take very well on American oak, you would be better off with a naphtha stain. I would stain it a few shades darker than you want then rub the stain back with a scotch pad, this way you can create a bit of shading in the nooks and crannies which will help with your 'antique' finish.

Ammonia fuming gives a very even result, you can get slightly weaker grades of ammonia which are a lot less hazardous to work with, you just need to leave the furniture under the polythene fuming "tent" for a bit longer, say four hours instead of two. If you have garage to work in this is an entirely realistic process for the hobbyist aiming for professional looking results.

Some people find fumed oak looks a bit "cold", in which case a brushed on coat of garnet shellac will restore the warmth and still look very natural. Finally you oil or varnish the piece, or apply whatever protective finish you prefer.

Good luck.
