Thanks for the advert, Blister. It was a fairly straightforward job and still works as well as the day I finished making it.

That's OK BOb ,

Any pumps going cheap or should I say " SUCK "

That's started me thinking (sound of cogs very slowly turning). Has anyone made up a similar "rotary connector" to fit on/in a headstock that doesn't have an outboard thread?

i know i am well out of my depth here, but how do you find the centre using this method, looks good though.

I think the idea is, knowing you're going to reverse it onto a vacuum chuck to remove the footring/method of holding - you mark the centre in some way, then bring up the tailstock centre, while you turn on the pump.

Spot on Chris.

Edwards is a very reputable brand and one of the leaders in vacuum pumps in Britain. That's a very useful eBay link.

Hi All,

Does anyone have any idea or links to info that shows possible methods of using a vacuum chuck if the spindle has no central hole as in my Record CL4 :?:

Mike C

Sounds like a daft idea, but it should work - Drill a hole through the spindle !

Lathe turning slowly, long series drill in the tailstock and plenty of lubrication.....or am I missing something ?

Chris.

Hi Mike.

Craft Supplies have got one here it looks to have a revolving collar. Bit expensive though, and doesn't look as versatile as the other types around.

Hi Mike,

I've been asked that question often. The truth is that my lathe has a hole through the spindle so I don't have the problem and so I've never bothered to solve it.

However, I have thought about it and I think I've worked out how it could be done. I've put the idea on my website

http://www.bobchapman.co.uk/rotary_adaptor.pdf

As I say, I've not actually built the device, but think it might work. It might even be possible to adapt a faceplate to carry the two bearings. I'd be interested in other ideas/improvements.

the vacum chuck system on my lathe has a rotary adaptor, the vb36 has got a hollow spindle but it has got a door at the back with a cut of switch so a adaptor solved the problem and in effect is the same thing you would need if you had asolid spindle lathe.

Thanks guys for the responses.

Your idea looks like it might work Bob, using vacuum bearings ( not sure exactly what they are called). One for the winter nights in the workshop.

Regards,

Mike C
