Right this is all new to me and is bugging the heck out of me as they only have online help gubbins.

Want to get something from a-b using this as starting point......
https://www.upstoday.com/
Which gave me £10.50 inc vat so why did things not work out and ends up £15.70 ?

This is the "livechat" to help enlighten you......

Welcome to our online help service. Someone will be with you shortly.

You are now chatting with 'Jo'

Jo: Hello, you're through to Jo. How can I help you today?

andy: door to door @ 10.50 goes to 15.70 why?

Jo: I am very sorry to hear this.

Jo: Did you add cover Andy?

andy: no cover needed as 50 value

Jo: Do you have the weight, dimensions, contents and value of the parcel so I can get the quote for you?

andy: 3.5kg 65x65x25

Jo: Thank you Andy.

Jo: Can you please provide me with both the collection and delivery postcodes in order for me to complete your quote?

andy: from dt101ng to le100py

Jo: https://www.upstoday.com/ship?col=219&d ... 5#/results

Jo: £15.70 is the cheapest service Andy.

Jo: Are you still there?

andy: Crikey Charlie!! this is hard work. Why 15.70 when it is in the given parameters of the 10.50 service? Am I missing something? Embarrasing as already told someone it is 10.50

Jo: You must not have entered all the information ie postcodes/dimensions Andy.

andy: https://www.upstoday.com/ship?col=219&d ... 5#/results do you not have this standard option available to me at 10.50 as this is where things go after filling out those exact same details 5 times

Jo: Andy, the cheapest service is for £15.70. I am sorry.

andy: This is the first ever time I have considered sending something? DO YOU HAVE A 10.50 SERVICE AVAILABLE FOR ANY PACKAGES AT ALL? Is the website wrong?

Jo: Yes, however this can depend on different factors ie weight, dimensions and distance in travel.

andy: Yes and those are the same factors I typed in and your website offers the 10.50 option to me but then changes it to 15.70?? What are the factors for 10.50? Am I being conned??? Is there a call center to contact and sort this out?

Jo: We do not have a call center Andt.

Jo: Andy*

Jo: Did you enter all the dimensions in as well as the weight?

andy: https://www.upstoday.com/ you have dimensions and postcodes please try it and tell me what you get

Jo: I get £15.70 inc VAT Andy.

Jo: Is there anything else I can help you with?

Jo: As I have not heard from you in a while, I will hopefully assume that I have answered all your questions for now, so will close the chat with my thanks for contacting us. Of course, if you do have another issue please don’t hesitate to come back to us.

It's no help, but are you watching the TV Series "Humans" at all? I couldn't help but hear Anita's voice when I was reading Jo's responses! ;-)

Alas I'm not Andy  Way too busy buying and showing 8)

Can anyone just fill in the form I linked to with the same details and see what price they get ?

Cheers Andy

If I fill in the form with the postcodes and weight, I get the number you got; if I fill in the form with the postcodes, weight and dimensions (click the "longer than 1m?" box even though your parcel isn't) then I get the figure she got.

It's common for couriers to charge 'virtual weight' - essentially, they nominally charge by the kilo, but if your parcel is particularly large they'll charge a pretend weight that compensates for it taking up space that could be filled with other parcels. If their truck can carry 2000kg but because there are large parcels in there they can only fit 1000kg of parcels in it, then on a strict per-kilo price they're only getting half as much money as they could be for the journey. So instead, they charge people extra money for their parcels being over a certain 'normal' density.

Anyway, don't despair: your mistake wasn't missing the non-obvious part of the quote form to enter dimensions, your mistake was going direct to the courier in the first place. I've nearly always had much better pricing by going through a third party broker, such as:

http://www.parcelmonkey.co.uk (often best prices for mainland UK)
http://www.transglobal.org.uk (often best prices for international)

ParcelMonkey quotes around a tenner for the same journey - albeit from some courier called 'DX' that I've not heard of before!
