........ the daft prices being realised have been noted and shelves, cupboards and attics have been searched :)

Toby, you certainly can spot them!*

I have just flicked through "Patented and Transitional Metal Planes in America 1827 - 1927" expecting to find it in there but could not spot anything like it. Nevertheless, my own wild guess is that it belongs to that fertile time in the late C19th when iron planes were new and many inventors had bright ideas, before the Stanley / Bailey designs came to dominate.

Not a huge price for what must be a very rare plane - so maybe it would have fetched more, if more people knew what it was!

(*Do you look at every ebay plane listing?!)

I was watching that, just for the final price.
Knob is like the Stanley low type so I guess could be late 19th Century.

Such a strange and over complicated looking plane.
Looks as if you can change the angle of the front knob buy the screws in the side.
Cool

This is only a guess but I think the first one might be a Foss' Patent Iron Smoother from 1878. There's a picture of one on page 69 of "Patented and Transitional Metal Planes in America" volume 1 and it seems to have the same distinctive cut away sides as the eBay plane. Also a lever cap with a screw. I can't find a matching picture on-line at the moment but someone else might, given the hint.

As for the second one, if the bronze smoother with the steel sole is as good as it might be, that could be about £250; the plated brace could be £100 and the other two about £20 and £50... no, it still doesn't add up. Maybe the bullnose is a Norris?

The bull nose is a Norris you can tell by the smart chamfering of the curves. Still more money than sence some..
