I have just made a cd cabinet from reclaimed oak,the wood came from a variety of different places,I have stained the wood to balance up the different colours of timber using Rustins medium oak stain.I have ended up with some of the oak dark brown, some with a pinkish castand some the colour of light pine.Is there any way of evening out the colours.

I know this was a while ago but I've just registered.

Unfortunately you'll never get a perfect match over the entire piece because of the varying types of wood involved. However, if you can be bothered, you could get very close by doing the following.

Remove any finish using stripper or sanding.

Apply a 2 pack wood bleach something like Vitableach (this will take most of the natural colour out of the timber giving you a white base to start from)

Choose your wood stain, something intense like an Oil Stain and overcoat using Button or Transparent Polish and then wax.

A lot of work but it worth it.

Any questions please just ask.
